Overview

This is the route for anyone who'd rather experience the full breadth of Sindhupalchowk district than reach the lakes as quickly as possible. From Chautara, the district headquarters, the trail climbs through the small Tamang village of Phurse and the open yak-grazing pastures of Kami Kharka, through increasingly dense rhododendron, oak, and pine forest to the forest camp at Pauwa Bas, and on through Hile Bhanjyang toward Nasimpati — a genuinely different set of villages and forest types than the short route via Chhimti ever touches. From Nasimpati, the push to Panch Pokhari follows the same final approach as the short route, but rather than turning straight back around, this itinerary builds in a full rest-and-exploration day at the lakes themselves — time to properly visit all five ponds, the Bumba Ruwa Waiba Memorial, and the viewpoint above, without a return trek looming the same afternoon. The descent is where this route genuinely earns its 'traverse' name: rather than retracing the ascent, the trail heads down through a different valley entirely, via Tuppi Danda's ridge and on to the Tamang riverside village of Dhap, before a final drive out via Melamchi. Eight days, twice the cultural breadth of the short route, and a loop that never once doubles back on itself.

Highlights

  • The most complete cultural and scenic version of this trek — twice the villages and forest variety of the short route
  • A genuine rest-and-exploration day at Panch Pokhari itself, with time to visit all five lakes and the Bumba Ruwa Waiba Memorial properly
  • A non-repeating loop finishing at a completely different river valley than the one it started in
  • The most gradual, best-acclimatised altitude profile of any strategy in this document
