Upper Mustang

Upper Mustang is the trek in this series that looks the least like Nepal and the most like Tibet — because geologically and culturally, it essentially is Tibet, a rain-shadow desert plateau sealed off from the rest of the country by the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges and closed to outside visitors entirely until 1992. What lies inside is the former independent Kingdom of Lo: eroded red-and-ochre cliffs riddled with centuries-old cave dwellings, a landscape of wind-carved canyons and mule caravans that has changed astonishingly little since it controlled the Trans-Himalayan salt trade between Tibet and India, and, at its heart, Lo Manthang — a genuinely walled medieval city, home to a five-story royal palace, four historic monasteries, and a Loba community still practising an unbroken Tibetan Buddhist tradition. The trek follows the Kali Gandaki River north from Jomsom through Kagbeni — the official gateway to the restricted zone — climbing through a string of whitewashed, chorten-studded villages before reaching Lo Manthang itself, with genuine route choices beyond it: a demanding "upper route" east to the cave monastery of Luri Gompa and the remote village of Yara, or a return south via the sacred lake of Damodar Kunda and the pilgrimage site of Muktinath. Unlike almost every other trek in this series, Upper Mustang's real difficulty isn't altitude or technical terrain — it tops out under 4,300 m and every source consulted for this document rates it moderate — but access itself: a restricted-area permit costing USD 500 for the first ten days alone, a legally mandated minimum of two trekkers per group, and a landscape so sparsely populated and so sensitive, sitting directly against the Tibetan border, that Nepal limits visitor numbers to a fraction of what its neighbouring trekking regions receive each year.
