Overview
This is the itinerary the clear majority of operator sources in this document's set describe as the standard route into Upper Mustang, and for good reason: it delivers every major headline site — Lo Manthang's walled city and royal palace, Ghar Gompa's ancient monastery, the Chhoser sky caves, and Tsarang's own distinct King's Palace and Dzong — without the extra days or genuinely more demanding terrain the eastern route to Yara and Luri Gompa requires. From Jomsom, the trail follows the Kali Gandaki to Kagbeni, the formal gateway to the restricted zone, before climbing through Chele, Samar, and Syangboche toward the high plateau country around Ghami and Tsarang. A short climb over Nyi La and a visit to Ghar Gompa deliver the first views of Lo Manthang itself, where this itinerary builds in two full nights — one for the walled city's own monasteries and royal palace, one for the dedicated Chhoser Valley excursion to the sky caves. The return retraces a related but not identical path back through Ghami and Chhusang to Jomsom, closing the loop. Sixteen days including Kathmandu-Pokhara transfers, a genuinely moderate altitude profile throughout, and, for trekkers with limited time or a first exposure to this specific region, the most complete standard version of this trek available.
Highlights

- Ghar Gompa (Lo Gekar), among the oldest monasteries in Nepal
- Tsarang's own King's Palace and five-story Dzong, genuinely distinct from Lo Manthang's own
- The Chhoser sky caves as a dedicated day trip from Lo Manthang
