Overview

This is the shape nearly every experienced operator in this document's own source material converges on, and for good reason — it's the pacing that actually works. From Lukla, the trail follows the Dudh Koshi through Phakding and the national park checkpoint at Monjo to Namche Bazaar, the Khumbu's centuries-old trading capital and the first of two dedicated acclimatisation stops. From Namche, the route climbs through Tengboche — home to the region's largest monastery, framed by Ama Dablam — and on to Dingboche, the second acclimatisation stop, where a hike above 5,000 m on Nangkartshang Peak does the physiological work of adapting to thinner air before the trail pushes on through Lobuche to Gorak Shep, the last, sparest settlement before the goal. From there, a full day is spent walking to Everest Base Camp itself and back — the literal staging ground of every Everest expedition, though notably without a view of the summit it's named for — before a pre-dawn climb the following morning to Kala Patthar, the actual viewpoint everyone came for: Everest's summit standing directly ahead, ringed by Lhotse, Nuptse, and Pumori. The descent retraces the route back to Lukla for the return flight. Fourteen days, sound acclimatisation, and the single most reliable itinerary in this entire document for getting first-time high-altitude trekkers to Everest Base Camp and home again safely.

Highlights

  • Standing at the literal base of the world's highest mountain, on the ground Hillary and Tenzing's 1953 expedition used
  • The full Everest panorama from Kala Patthar — the actual reason to do this trek, not an optional extra
  • Tengboche Monastery's afternoon puja with Ama Dablam behind it
  • Namche Bazaar's centuries-old Saturday market
  • The most proven, most gradually-paced route to Everest Base Camp
