Overview

Most Gosaikunda trekkers approach from Dhunche and retrace the same trail on the way back down. This route does neither: it starts instead at Sundarijal, a short drive from central Kathmandu at the edge of Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park, and walks in what several operators specifically describe as the 'anti-clockwise' direction — climbing through Chisapani, Kutumsang, and Tharepati in the culturally distinct Helambu foothills before crossing the genuinely demanding Laurebina La Pass (4,610 m) from the south side and descending into the Gosaikunda basin from an entirely different angle than every Dhunche-based itinerary in this document. Because most Gosaikunda traffic approaches from Dhunche, this route's first several days are noticeably quieter. The trade-off is real: this is a harder, less-supported trail than the Dhunche approach, with more basic teahouses at Ghopte and Phedi, a longer overall itinerary, and a genuine high-altitude pass crossing rather than a straightforward up-and-down walk. After the pass and a stay at the lake, the route descends via the familiar Chandanbari-to-Dhunche stretch, giving trekkers on this itinerary a look at both approaches to Gosaikunda in a single, non-repeating trip. This is the route to recommend to trekkers who have already done a standard Nepal teahouse trek and want something with more route-finding variety and a genuine pass to cross.

Highlights

  • A complete, non-repeating traverse — no day retraces another day's ground
  • Crosses Laurebina La Pass (4,610 m), the highest point in this entire document set
  • Starts at Sundarijal, reachable by a short local drive rather than a long transfer — trekking begins the same day you leave Kathmandu
  • Passes through both Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park and Langtang National Park
  • Noticeably quieter trail for the first several days than any Dhunche-based route
  • Views of Dorje Lakpa, Gaurishankar, and Jugal Himal from Tharepati, in addition to the Langtang and Ganesh Himal views around the lake itself
