Langtang Valley

Langtang Valley is a glaciated Himalayan valley in Rasuwa district, roughly 120 km and a 7–8 hour drive north of Kathmandu, making it the closest major high-altitude trekking region to Nepal's capital and the only one of the country's "big three" treks — alongside Everest Base Camp and the Annapurna Circuit — that requires no domestic flight to reach. Protected within Langtang National Park (established 1976, Nepal's first Himalayan national park, 1,710 sq km of core area plus a 420 sq km buffer zone), the valley runs east from the trailhead town of Syabrubesi (1,460 m) along the Langtang Khola river gorge, climbing through subtropical forest, bamboo groves, and rhododendron woodland before opening into a broad glacial basin at Langtang Village (3,430 m) and terminating at the high mountain hamlet of Kyanjin Gompa (3,870 m), beneath the sheer south face of Langtang Lirung (7,227 m). The valley is the ancestral home of the Tamang people, a Tibetan-Buddhist community whose stone villages, mani walls, chortens, and monasteries give the trek its distinctive cultural character. On 25 April 2015, a magnitude-7.8 earthquake triggered a catastrophic ice-and-rock avalanche off Langtang Lirung that buried the original Langtang village, killing roughly 310 people including many trekkers and guides. The valley has since been fully rebuilt on safer ground, and walking it today is as much an act of quiet solidarity with a resilient community as it is a Himalayan adventure. Wildlife includes red pandas, Himalayan tahr, musk deer, langur monkeys, and over 250 recorded bird species, while the head of the valley offers optional high-altitude extensions to Kyanjin Ri (4,773 m), Tserko Ri (4,984 m), Gosaikunda Lake (4,380 m), and the technical Ganja La Pass (5,122 m) into the Helambu region.
