Overview
This is the shape most operators default to, and for good reason — it's the version of this trek that gets everything right without asking for more time than most visitors actually have. From Nayapul, the trail follows the Bhurungdi Khola through the permit checkpoint at Birethanti and the lunch stop at Hile to Tikhedhunga, where the trek's defining stretch begins: a sustained climb of roughly 3,000 stone steps to the Magar village of Ulleri, hard enough that most people remember it as vividly as the sunrise two days later. From Ulleri, a gentler climb through Banthanti and Nangethanti reaches Ghorepani, the busiest village on the whole route and the staging point for a pre-dawn walk to Poon Hill itself — a 3,210 m panorama that takes in Dhaulagiri, Annapurna I, Annapurna South, Nilgiri, and Machhapuchhre in one uninterrupted sweep. Rather than retracing the ascent, this itinerary heads on from Ghorepani through the pass at Deurali and the forest village of Tadapani to Ghandruk, one of the largest and most historically significant Gurung villages in the Annapurna region, with a dedicated culture museum and genuinely striking stone-paved architecture. The descent from Ghandruk through Kimche and Syauli Bazaar closes the loop back toward Nayapul and the drive out to Pokhara. Five days, one real staircase, one unforgettable sunrise, and a return route that never once repeats the way in.
Highlights
- The full Poon Hill sunrise panorama — Dhaulagiri, Annapurna I, Annapurna South, Nilgiri, and Machhapuchhre in one frame
- Nepal's most famous stone staircase, climbing out of Ulleri
- Genuine Gurung village life at Ghandruk, including its culture museum
- A true loop rather than an out-and-back trek — the return route shares almost no ground with the ascent
- The best teahouse infrastructure of any trek in this document's series
