Overview
Poon Hill's panorama is genuinely worth the crowd it draws, but it does draw a crowd, and this itinerary exists for trekkers who'd rather not share the sunrise with quite so many people. Rather than climbing to Ghorepani directly, this route starts at Ghandruk and heads first to Tadapani, then on to a high camp at Dobato — already higher than most trekkers on the standard route will ever get near Ghorepani — before a short push the following morning to Muldai Viewpoint itself, at 3,637 m genuinely higher than Poon Hill, reached by a narrow forest trail that keeps casual visitors away almost by accident. The reward is a sunrise from above the morning haze that can dull views lower down, with light that several sources describe as lasting noticeably longer than the equivalent show at Poon Hill. From Muldai, the trail descends to Ghorepani, and the following dawn delivers the second sunrise viewpoint of the trip — Poon Hill itself, this time reached from the quieter side of the mountain rather than the crowded main approach. The descent from Ghorepani through Ulleri and the famous staircase, downhill this time, closes the loop back to Nayapul. Two sunrises, two very different crowds, one trip.
Highlights
- Two genuinely different sunrise viewpoints on one trip — quiet, high Muldai first, then the more famous Poon Hill panorama
- A route direction almost no other operator sells, approaching from Ghandruk rather than Nayapul
- Above-the-haze sunrise views from Muldai that several sources describe as longer-lasting than Poon Hill's
- Still finishes on the same famous Ulleri staircase as the Classic Loop, just downhill instead of up
