Overview

This is the itinerary for trekkers who've read Strategy 1's own brief mention of Tsum Valley and want the real thing rather than a passing glimpse of its own junction point. Every source in this document's set that addresses this extension in any detail treats it as a genuine highlight — one first-hand account states plainly that skipping it was 'deeply regretted.' From the same junction near Philim that Strategy 1 walks straight past, this itinerary turns instead toward Lokpa and a full, dedicated week through Tsum Valley's own distinct landscape and culture: Chumling and Chhokangparo as the valley deepens, and Nile and Mu Gompa near its upper end, close to the Tibetan border, with a dedicated exploration day built in for the valley's own significant monastic sites — Mu Gompa itself, Rachen Gompa, and Gumba Lungdung, the latter two home to active communities of nuns practising traditional meditation and medicine. The Tsumbas themselves, a Tibetan-origin population with their own distinct dialect and cultural practices genuinely set apart from their immediate neighbours on the main circuit, are presented throughout this document's own sources as the real reason to make this detour, not only the scenery. From the valley's lower reaches, the trail rejoins the standard circuit near Deng, and Strategy 1's own itinerary continues unchanged from there — Namrung, Samagaon, Samdo, and the full Larkya La crossing. Twenty-one days, a genuine extra week of dedicated exploration, and, per this document's own strongest first-hand endorsement, the single addition most worth making to the standard circuit.

Highlights

  • A full dedicated week in Tsum Valley, a genuinely isolated Buddhist pilgrimage valley almost entirely separate in culture and character from the main Manaslu circuit
  • Mu Gompa, Rachen Gompa, and Gumba Lungdung — three significant monastic sites, the latter two home to active communities of nuns
  • The complete standard Manaslu circuit and Larkya La crossing, unchanged from Strategy 1
  • A genuine encounter with the Tsumba people and their own distinct dialect and cultural practices
